I know there are a ton of bands that aren't posted on this short list, but this is a decent start. The southwest has something to offer.

On a 90 degree night, the venue was 130 inside. Drenched in sweat and dehydrated, but it didn't matter. Deviated Instinct finally came to Arizona on 9/8/10 and was well worth the wait.

Drone Throne

Had never seen them but really like their split LP with TOAD. I recommend picking it up

These guys play out a lot and I never get to catch them. Good set.

Swedish Invasion pt2: "I've had chlamydia like 2 times"

The second night of General Surgery's US Tour was part of the 5th annual Los Angeles Murderfest at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood,CA on 5/9/09. There were great bands and not so great bands, I was able to shoot a couple of them.

STORMCROW

Stormcrow was the first band to really get an audience reaction, as they put on a great short set.

OUTLAW ORDER

Outlaw Order is ex members of Eyehategod and definitely have a similar sound. Favorite part was when the drummer kicked the second bass drum off his riser, because no one needs 2 bass drums.

GHOUL

This guy said he was the biggest Ghoulunatic there is. Apparently he would suck all their ballls to prove it. (dont worry, video proof coming soon). This was also the 1st show with Ghoul on this tour, in which Ghoul killed a lot of people.

GENERAL SURGERY

The doctors were finally in, covered in blood with their sexy nurses. Whoever Ghoul didnt kill, the good doctors finished off.

the return of the Nutty Nuggets

Last time Stormcrow came to Portland they stayed at my house. The next morning one of my neighbors thought it would be a great idea to be an asshole and leave this awesome note (above) on their windshield. If it wasnt so hilarious we probably would have been pissed. We were puzzled by one line in particular, the one that said "nutty nuggets!". Apparently it is a generic version of Grape Nuts, and there was a random box littered in the street which they were blamed for. With memories like that, I knew I was in for a good time this weekend. Stormcrow rolled into Portland for the second time since October this time with Japanese cult metallers Coffins. te show took place 5/2/09 at Satyricon and was supported by Aldebaran and Thrones. This was also my first show that I recorded with an actual camcorder!!! the quality is waaaaay better than anything I have ever shot, I'm still new too it and working out the kinks so give me a little time.

ALDEBARAN

I showed up too late to get video of their set but got a way too far snapshot of this great Portland doom band.

THRONES

Thrones is Joe Preston, which is a good indicator that it is awesome. A guy with a great resume of bands doing his own thing, and doing it well.

STORMCROW

I likely have more video of Stormcrow than most any other band. Unfortunately Brian pretty much lost his voice so he is struggling a bit, but the band still sounds great.

COFFINS

I had missed a lot of their set at Maryland Death Fest last year (2008) so I was stoked these guys were coming. They have that perfect mix of old school death with a little sludge. Super excited to see them 2 more times!

they finally ARISE!

Before this tour, the last time AMEBIX played live I was in my front yard in West Phoenix, Arizona playing with Bluegrass, my favorite character from Silver Hawks, which i was lucky enough to have his action figure. I dont think that has anything to do with this show per say, except Bluegrass did have a mohawk under his cowboy hat.

In all seriousness this reunion is as big of a deal (if not bigger) as the earlier reunions of bands such as Carcass and At the Gates, which were not only successful, but highly entertaining. I wasnt sure what to expect from this show, since they had long disbanded .Luckily Amebix has proven to be just as powerful now as ever, and put on one of the best performances I have seen by any band January 27th 2009 in Seattle,WA at Neumos. I do wish i could have gotten better footage of Amebix, but the place erupted while they played.

MASS GRAVE

In the current state of crust being mostly cookie cutter and cliche, I feel lucky to have seen this band from Vancouver BC. These guys are fucking ferocious. I recommend checking these guys out especially live. They have some quality splits out with Stormcrow and Warfair?




TRAGEDY

One of the best things about living in Portland is that this band is local. Probably the best band in HC right now.





AMEBIX

Its like they spent the last 20 years practicing. These guys sounded amazing. I'm kinda speechless.

Leave Your Parents at Home

After a month of houses and promoters being unable to get a show for Knelt Rote, INCISION TATTOO in Glendale,AZ opened up their shop late December 10,2008 to give the touring band as well as a couple of young locals a lace to play. Incision has great artists and great people. If you are in town or passing through, make sure to get tattooed there.

DIAS MAS OSCUROS

Being 2 years removed from Arizona, this was the 1st time I had heard Dias Mas Oscuros. I would definitely say they are something Phoenix punk needs. Fast and heavy with songs about social change. Hope they stick around for a while.

BLACK PATHOLOGY

My good friend Sam just joined this band but hasnt played a show with them yet. These guys still rule, but once they get his brutal gutturals they be way killer.

KNELT ROTE

It seemed like Knelt Rote was going to be arrested by Murphy's Law (not the band) when it came to this show. First off going a month without any confirmation to have everything set 30 hours before could be jarring. But things didnt stop there. In Gallup,NM their van broke down so they sat for hours and lost $700 in repairs. Then showing up to the show later than they hoped. They immediately had to start setting up. But when they showed there was about 40 or so people waiting to see them play. As luck would have it a fight broke out while they were setting up. A kids dad starting fighting his friends, a pit bull was involved, then threats of everyone getting shot. Basically a normal westside party. After everything died down and we got the problems eliminated enough, Knelt Rote finally got to play for a diminished yet appreciative crowd. All in all, the show was fun, the bands were great and the Incision dudes are great people.

back to Arizona

Another trip to Arizona with perfect timing to see a good house show. First up was a new band, Sunyata who were playing only their second show. Sunyata in a Phoenix grindcore band featuring former and current members of bands such as Conflict Resolution, Warfair?, ETTS, and Sea of Deprivation to name a few. They just recorded a demo with Ryan Butler at Arcane Digital in Chandler,AZ so check the link to hear the new tracks because they are brutal.

the house went pretty crazy for these guys and it was good to see them again on this tour. the video is shaky, I keep getting knocked around, but that is part of the fun.

the Pajama-jammy-jam

October 17, 2008 was another infamous Portland house show. Unfortunately I broke my camera after the show, so the next batch of videos will either be much better, or worse, who knows. Great show, great bands, and a keg full of Lucky Lab IPA.

THE WEREWOLF KORPS

I believe this was their 1st show but I could be wrong. I'm glad to see a death metal band in Portland, especially one that doesn't fall into homeboy breakdowns. Unfortunately the video doesnt pick up the vocals, which had a delay effect that sounded rad.



STORMCROW

This was Stormcrow's 1st real tour but 2nd time in Portland this year. Real powerful live band, and I look forward to seeing them play in Phoenix October 30th. The video sounds like someone is making popcorn, but you still hear remnants of sweet riffs.



KNELT ROTE


Knelt Rote finished the show and as always, made the house go nuts. I wish the picture wasn't so dark, but I think the audio came out better this time. my battery died before i could take pictures of them playing so above is an unrelated picture of Lucas, the grindcore version of LL Cool J
